Small painting projects that freshen up your home before the holidays

Blue front door with a fall wreath on a brick house

With the holidays coming up, a lot of North Texas homeowners start looking around the house and noticing the scuffed hallway, the tired front door or the dining room that never quite got finished. The good news is you don't have to repaint the whole house to make a real difference. A few well-chosen projects can change how your home feels when guests walk in.

Start where guests will notice

Think about the path a visitor takes: up the walk, through the front door, into the entry and over to the living or dining area. Fresh paint along that route goes a long way.

  • Front door. A newly painted front door is one of the quickest ways to make a home look cared for. It's also a fun place to try a bolder color.
  • Entry and hallways. These spaces take the most bumps from shoes, bags and pets. Repainting them, and touching up nicks along the way, makes the whole house feel cleaner.
  • Dining room. If you'll be gathered around the table, a warm wall color or a single accent wall can set the mood for the season.

Don't forget trim, doors and baseboards

Walls get most of the attention, but worn trim is often what makes a room look dated. Baseboards collect scuffs from vacuums and feet, and interior doors pick up fingerprints around the handles. Repainting them in a crisp white or a soft neutral can make even freshly painted walls look sharper. Satin and semi-gloss finishes are popular here because they're easier to wipe clean.

Patch and repair while you're at it

Small nail holes, hairline cracks and dents in drywall are easy to overlook until the light hits them just right. Patching and sanding before painting gives you a smooth, even finish. If you've been meaning to move artwork or take down an old shelf, now is a good time, so the wall can be repaired and painted in one go.

Consider your kitchen cabinets

If the kitchen is where everyone ends up, painted cabinets can give it a whole new look without replacing anything. Cabinet painting involves more prep than walls, including cleaning, sanding and careful application, so it's worth planning ahead rather than leaving it to the last minute.

Tips for planning around the holidays

  • Plan early. Fall and early winter are busy times for many homeowners, so reach out sooner rather than later if you'd like work done before guests arrive.
  • Pick colors ahead of time. Having your colors settled before the work starts keeps things moving. Try samples on the wall and look at them in both daylight and evening light.
  • Leave time for paint to cure. Paint can feel dry quickly but takes longer to fully harden. Give freshly painted surfaces some breathing room before decorating, hanging wreaths or setting heavy items against them.
  • Get rooms ready. Move furniture out of the room or away from the walls, and pack up decor before the crew arrives. Our interior painting prep checklist walks through the details.

Small projects, big impact

You don't need a full makeover to feel good about your home this season. A fresh entry, a new front door color or clean, bright trim can be enough to make the house feel ready for company. We serve homeowners across Dallas, Plano, Frisco, McKinney and nearby cities.
